Ingredients

7-10 Cortland apples (more if you want it to be more about the fruit, always a good thing; other great baking apples like Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Granny Smith, etc.)

stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter

1 cup light brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup all purpose flour

1 pinch salt

Vanilla ice cream, to serve

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400*F.

2. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and let it cool until it’s safe to touch.

3. If you have time, peel the apples. If not, just slice them with the skin on into 1-2 inch pieces and arrange them in a 3-4 quart casserole, gratin, or baking dish.

4. Once the butter has cooled, mix in 1 cup of light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon of salt. Use your fingers to combine the ingredients with the butter. Then, add the flour and rub it into the butter mixture until well combined. Evenly distribute the crumble topping over the sliced apples, and finish with a pinch of salt.

5. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
